John Callahan was once an influential figure in Birmingham, Alabama -- a brash entrepreneur known as much for his hard-edged personality as his business success. Now Callahan is living out his golden years in self-imposed isolation, a tough old man withdrawn from the community and seemingly obsessed with mechanical acquisitions. When he mysteriously disappears with a horde of cash, his estranged daughter is notified.
Kristen Callahan is the sole remaining family that the old man can claim. But she's the mirror image of her father, a free spirit who seeks wisdom in unexpected places. To locate her father, she contacts a low rent detective and law student named Charlie Byrd. Together they discover that J.C. Callahan disappeared on a quest, searching for a legend...
The Porsche 550 Spyder. One of the rarest cars ever built, 550 Spyders are prized by wealthy collectors as valuable works of automotive art. For years, rumors whispered that one such car was stolen and lost forever. Now, after more than five decades, the mythical "lost Spyder" has finally been found.
J.C. Callahan has the Spyder in his grasp, and its shocking secrets will not only change his life -- they also may end it.

This book was a surprise to me. Having read Sean Michael's excellent book on Airstream travel trailer lifestyle, 'Long Long Honeymoon - Living Large in a Small Tin Can', I was blindsided to see this book, a mystery and adventure novel! I assumed this was going to be of limited interest, only because I am one who generally views vehicles as a means of getting from here to there. I knew from his book on Airstreams, that Sean is a 'car guy' and a fan of Porsches. That was the part that made this so inviting. I wondered if and how, this guy writing in a totally different genre could do justice to such a novel. Sean very successfully lures his readers into the world of rare and exotic sports cars. You will begin to understand.

You have heard about 'page turners', yes? You start and you can't stop; you know it is late and you have to get up early, but heck, it's just a little ways to the end of the chapter. Damn! At the end of the chapter, you are left on the edge of a cliff. What is Charlie Byrd going to do now? OK, one more chapter!

The word pictures a novelist can paint are critical to being an effective storyteller. Sean not only takes the reader there, but he puts you in the car, in the room, on the road, and everywhere else you don't expect to go. You can just about smell the gas, and feel the heat and humidity.

This is a relatively fast and easy read; totally entertaining, and a great book for a weekend. Sean, if you see this, let's have some more of Charlie Byrd! Good job!

Still trying to figure out why this novel did not grab me. I loved the main character and would love to read more of his adventures. However, think maybe there was too much descriptions of him and the characters which tends to bore me--would rather have more discussion about everyday actions. Maybe because the author is a screen writer primarily that this would have been better shown than written about? Your guess!
As a confirmed gear head who raced in SCCA events in the 1960s, I loved it.. The characters are believable and the author makes you care about them.

The story has some great twists, but even with its complications I had not problem keeping up with what's going on.
This is an excellent book by first time author Sean Michael. I've read all the "big names" and love fast paced thrillers, fast cars, and a good mystery. This book did not disappoint. A real page turner set in fresh locations (notably Birmingham, Alabama) with just the right number of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged until the book comes to a surprising end. I am looking forward to Mr. Michael's next effort.
We met the author of this book on our road trip to Alaska ... so it was extra delightful to read his book ... which is very well written and keeps your attention ... for one who usually reads self help books or true inspiring stories ... this was a switch ... and instead of feeling like I was wasting my time reading fiction ... I felt taken along on the journey and was curious to see how it would end ...
Fun, quick read. More about a boy meets girl than cars...
Good story line.
Author would "wander" around a topic for a page or two and finally make a point.
Enjoyed the protagonist and his approach to some of his problems.
Some actions were quite unrealistic, ie., driving as fast as possible in fear of his life, then suddenly he "would floor the gas and rapidly accelerate".
I would say it is the authors first book and he was trying to insert all the little tips he had read about.
Take one eccentric multi-millionaire, missing along with his most coveted Holy Grail of cars, add one intrepid but guarded daughter that claims to hate him yet hires a notable detective that's down on his luck and wants to be something else to find him, and you get a darn good mystery novel, which The Lost Spyder is. Too bad it seems vastly underrated, according to its sales figures. But forget the sales figures; this is a great read, and I enjoyed it immensely.
